Copyright Laws and Why You Should Give a Shit

Good Copy Bad Copy
is a documentary by Danish filmmakers following the controversy over American and international copyright laws. There are interviews with Girl Talk, a bigwig from the MPAA, founders of The Pirate Bay and DJ Danger Mouse. Altogether, the film is fair to both sides of the argument, although it's clear that the filmmakers lean toward the pro-sampling/pro-Creative Commons side.

The film itself is stylish and well-done, with footage of international experts lucidly explaining the history and significance of the copyright issue. In less than an hour, the documentary takes you to Girl Talk's Pittsburgh, The Pirate Bay's Sweden, etc. And it gives you a fascinating look into how technology can boost the creative licenses and freedoms of people, when it's used responsibly and collectively. The possibilities of Creative Commons and digital technology are exciting to say the least (if you don't know what Creative Commons is, the movie explains).

Best of all, the movie is free. You can stream it or download it through BitTorrent. Click here for the official site.
